Big trout continue to make the fishing news, and the first reported ling of the season was landed at the jetties.
Wednesday morning, with a stiff north wind still blowing, Pat Santry headed out of Sea Isle Bait Camp with live shrimp to fish West Bay. It turned out to be a good decision for the angler from Sea Isle who landed two trout, one measuring 28 inches and weighing more than 7 pounds, while the other was a 3.8-pound fish measuring 22 inches. A red fish — a 23-inch slot weighing 5.2 pounds — also was part of the stringer.
Harold Wadsworth limited his fishing to the Galveston Channel area of Pelican Island Wednesday because of the wind. Using fresh dead shrimp for bait, he landed small black drum, whiting and a stingray.
Fred Hall sent in our first report of a ling at the jetties this season. Hall and two companions were fishing the South Jetty on Tuesday when the big fish took a mullet cut in half. The ling measured 39 inches and was caught when a massive pile of seaweed floated by. Other fish landed were bull reds, sharks and black drum.
Capt. Jaime Cantu hosted returning customers George Vickery and his son Josh and daughter Jolynn to a productive fishing trip Saturday. The family landed Spanish mackerel, reds and sheepshead. Live shrimp and fresh shad were the baits.
Monday afternoon, there was a spurt of activity around the Santa Fe railroad bridge on trout. Corder Henderson and Mark Little used live shrimp fished under popping corks to land 12 trout to 22 inches between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
The Party Boat Capt. John hosted a private charter for the Baker Hughes Group of 73 that ended up at the old Buccaneer Field Area. Their catch included 102 red snapper to 16 pounds, two Atlantic sharpnose sharks and a bluefish. Several bull reds were caught and released.
