Galveston fishing report

The big news on the fishing scene was trout action around the railroad bridge next to the causeway.Wednesday morning, there were three reports of excellent catches of speckled trout by anglers using live shrimp fished under popping corks.

Rudy Masterson and Joan Humphries fished their favorite hole between the two bridges and landed 12 specks to 22 inches.A large jack crevalle gave Humphries quite a fight before breaking off when the line got tangled in the concrete base of one of the utility poles.

Fred Sparks, Jimmy Scott and Bill Walker teamed up for a combined catch of 15 specks. The fish were caught at various locations on the north side of the bridge.A single Spanish mackerel and two gafftop rounded out their catch for the morning.

The other report from the causeway area was unconfirmed and involved two anglers who caught several nice specks and sheepshead.

Spanish mackerel continue to roam the beach front with the size being on the small side. Most of the fish are attacking live shrimp with only a few being hooked.Milt Harrison reported the action while fishing the rock groins off of 24th Street.

Personally, I have been expecting trout action around the causeway area to break open any day now. When checking my reports for the last nine years, they showed that at some point in April there was a flurry of action on speckled trout and other fish. After the first round of big catches, trout action around that part of upper West Bay was fairly consistent during periods of good tidal movement and water clarity.

Another area that is ripe for turning on with speck action is around the piers and pilings along Channelview just around the bend from the railroad bridge.
