Excellent conditions for fishing continued to prevail in the Galveston area this week. The southeast winds and good tidal movement resulted in good water clarity, and with the strong tidal movement, action continued on par with some of the best this year.
Earlier this week Capt. Ron Woods, 2 Fish’Aholics Charters, hosted Tim Arendsen, his father-in-law Ted Banderkool and son Seth, all from Michigan, to a jetty fishing trip. Using live shrimp and cut bait, the anglers landed bull reds, slot reds, puppy drum, large oversized drum, Spanish mackerel, gafftop, shark, sand trout and hard heads. The highlight of the trip was a ling. All of the fish were released except for three reds and three Spanish mackerel.
The action came from outside both the North and South Jetties.
It was good to hear from Sarah Melcer again. She is a jetty pro and frequent contributor to the Reel Report.
Melcer was back on the water last
Tuesday and had a great catch, which she asked to be mentioned in honor
of Wanda Smith, wife of the original owner of Smitty’s Bait Camp on
Broadway. Smith passed away last January and was the aunt of Sarah’s
husband Stephen.
Melcer fished Abby’s Hole at the end of the South Jetty, which is named after her famous fishing dog and companion.
Using her favorite bait, white squid, she landed 25 gafftop and a huge stingray.
The big news from the beach front
was the arrival of large schools of shad that were working all along
the surf. When that occurs, not far behind are the predator fish and
Wednesday was not an exception.
Bulldog’s Bait Shop reported
customers running into excellent action on jack crevalle, bull reds and
sharks that were attacking the concentrations of shad.
