While red snapper fishing is on the minds of a lot of recreational anglers with only eight days remaining in the season after today, this is not the big news on the fishing scene.
The first two reported tarpon of the year were landed, the first coming Friday and the other Saturday.
Both were on boats of Tarpon Express Guide Service.
Capt. Sammy Flores said the first tarpon jumped many times and put up a great fight.
The second tarpon was landed by Gabe Chapman, a guest of Capt. Mark Gonzalez.
The action came in 22 to 24 feet of water, with natural baits taking both fish.
Capt. Mike Williams, operator of the guide service, said Tarpon Alley was in great shape with the water as green as it gets.
Lots of black tip sharks to 80 pounds, jackfish and kings to 30 pounds were caught in the famous alley.
Williams said he saw three tarpon last week in that area.
Sunday,
conditions started out good with a light wind and good water clarity;
however, as the day progressed, the wind increased and set things back a
little on the fishing scene.
I made a 40-mile trip southeast of the jetties and encountered choppy seas midway.
The wells and platforms in the vicinity of the Heald Bank were thick with sharks and king mackerel.
It was next to impossible to get a snapper rig down before one of the predator fish took the bait.
Saturday night, Teichman Point produced a good number of specks from around lighted docks and piers.
Kenny Summers and Billy Walker landed three specks shy of a double limit using free-lined live shrimp.
