Galveston fishing report

Galveston Fishing Charter Company
832-917-FISH(3474)

Lots of visitors were in Galveston on Wednesday taking advantage of the gorgeous weather.  While shopping and beachcombing attracted most of the mid-week crowd, just a few chose to go fishing.

Water levels Tuesday were gradually rising under a light southerly wind and were definitely an improvement over Monday’s situation.

While no fishing reports were in by press time, the following note was received from a reader asking about low water levels.

“We moved here from Fort Worth December 2011. Our question is concerning “water is low” that you have written about. In North Texas, drought or over use of a reservoir will cause low water. What are the conditions that cause low water here on the coast?”

After reading this note it dawned on me that others might have the same question.

It definitely is true on inland lakes, rivers and reservoirs that dry conditions and excessive use will draw down the water levels. That is not the case in coastal areas that reap the benefit of tidal ebb and flow. Over usage is not an issue since we are dealing with saltwater.

What affects the coastal water levels most are wind direction and atmospheric pressure.

The number one cause of low water levels in the bays and other coastal areas is a strong, persistent wind out of the north or west.  Cold fronts are the number one contributor to low water in the bays.

Depending on how long the frontal winds last and the velocity of the winds and strength of the high pressure following passage, tide levels will be anywhere from less than a foot below normal to as much as over two feet following northers.

On the other hand, high water levels along the coast are affected by the same factors, just from a different direction that being easterly and westerly.  Besides low pressure, flood waters from rains contribute to higher than normal tide levels.

Galveston Fishing Report 1-28-15

Galveston Fishing Charter Company
832-917-FISH(3474)

Sheepshead and sand trout were the only fish reported to be biting the past couple of days.

Willem Basson, who is visiting from Pongola, South Africa, caught three of the “jailbirds” while fishing from a friend’s dock on Offatts Bayou on Monday.

Ted Westerman fished from the 61st Street launching ramp Monday night and landed four sand trout using dead shrimp for bait.

Oscar Knight and Frank Miller fished Moses Lake on Tuesday and found the action on the slow side. Their tally for the morning was two sand trout, both caught on live shrimp fished on the bottom.

Last Saturday, Capt. Jill Williams hauled 55 anglers out to the Old Buccaneer Field area aboard the party boat Capt. John. Fishing in near perfect conditions in green water under light winds, the group landed 110 red snapper to 13 pounds along with black drum and Gulf trout.

Looking at the forecast at press time Tuesday, it appears that today and Thursday might present a couple of windows of good conditions for fishing. Look for speckled trout to make an appearance in fishing reports as the fish should be feeding in upper West Bay. Black drum, reds and sheepshead likely will be good bets for action around the jetties.

Galveston Fishing Report 1-27-15

Galveston Fishing Charter Company

Large black drum began appearing in pre-run numbers at the jetties over the weekend. While not in near the quantities we should see in about a month from now, the first of the “big uglies” are here.

Dennis Phillips and Charlene Peterson were among the boats at the North Jetty Sunday afternoon and were fishing for sheepshead along the rocks. During their three-hour fishing trip, two large black drum were hooked. One was brought to the side of the boat and released while the other broke off as it was approaching the stern.

Phillips estimated the fish were in the 30- to 40-inch range, and dead shrimp on a size 8 treble hook was the bait. There was no mention on how they fared on sheepshead.

Dusty Owen at Galveston Fishing Pier reported good numbers of whiting, sheepshead, gafftop and large black drum being caught by his customers last weekend.

The water temperature in both the bays and surf still remains below 60 degrees. With the warmer days ahead, the temperature should increase later this week. A rise of five to 10 degrees should do wonders for fishing.

Unfortunately, closer to this weekend, another cold front is due and with, it another drop in temperatures.

The good news is that the farther we go into the new year, the warmer the weather. The cold water is good for flounder reproduction, and this year’s long period of water temperatures in the 40s and 50s should help generate a good crop of young flounder.

Before leaving the subject of cold water, I want again to caution boaters about the shock effect of cold water. Water readings like we are experiencing will send a person who falls overboard into shock rather quickly.

For that reason, it is highly recommended that a Type 1 personal flotation device be worn at all times while the boat is underway in cold weather.

Galveston fishing report

Duck season ended Sunday, and now we will be seeing additional anglers on the water as the waterfowl hunters will be trading their shotguns for rods and reels.

Early analysis of the weather forecasts for this week indicates that we are in for another changing pattern in weather much like last week. Tuesday through Thursday appears to offer the best conditions for fishing as another cold front is headed our way arriving sometime Friday.

Anglers who are able to take advantage of the mid-week weather could be in store for a repeat of what took place last week.

Specks were being caught in West Bay in fair to good numbers while at the same time the surf and jetties were producing trout.

Reports of catches of nice-sized sheepshead have been received by fishermen tossing baits near the rocks and around piers and pilings all around Galveston.

The beachfront is holding good numbers of whiting, and when the wind drops, anglers should have an easy time picking up a few meals worth of whiting. One of the better baits for the tasty pan fish is dead shrimp with the shell peeled back to the tail.

A spot check of bait camps on the water indicated overall slow action Sunday morning. Anglers having access to protected, deep pockets of water are finding action on a variety of pan fish.

Marinas have been a good choice for fishermen with boats in a slip. The deeper waters around the slips have offered an outlet for anglers missing out on fishing because of the wind and other drawbacks we have been dealing with lately.

That Time of Year Black Drum Run
$450.00 for 4 People 5hrs.

Wind gusts to over 40 mph were pounding the Galveston Bay Complex Thursday afternoon and it appears that fishing will be wiped out for a few days. Although more pleasant conditions are in the forecast for this weekend, water levels and clarity likely will present an obstacle to fishing.

Soon, January will be behind us and we can start looking for the appearance of big drum around the jetties. The annual black drum run, along with trophy trout time, will be two of the highlights of February.

During windows of fishable conditions, the fish are here and are biting, as was evidenced by the action on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

Mark McDavid took his surf fishing gear to the beach front Monday and went after one of his favorite fish, whiting. The tally for his morning of fishing the surf was 25 good-sized whiting.

On the same day, Tommy Coughlin and his fishing buddy Ken Lange fished Big Pasture Bayou and caught several nice specks. Lange landed an 18-inch flounder as they were about to leave. Coughlin said the water temperature in the bayou was in the low 50s.

Until we see how this cold front affects the bays as far as water levels and clarity are concerned, it is difficult to predict where the best prospects for action will be this weekend.

Most likely, deeper pockets of water will be the key to finding fish. Offatts Bayou and canals off the Intracoastal Waterway, along with deep channels, most likely will be the best bets.

With the calm to light winds in the forecast, night fishing could be one of the better choices.

If you were lucky enough to have Monday off as a holiday the weather was the best so far this year.

Mild temperatures and calm winds triggered some excellent fishing, especially for speckled trout.
Richard Belleau, in his report from the 61st Street Fishing Pier, said that the surf was calm and green water reached all the way to the beach. Customers fishing the pier early Monday were catching black drum, bull reds, sheepshead and whiting.
Specks continue to roam the beach front rock groins and a report from the jetties indicated trout were there as well.

Bulldog’s bait shop reported David Netzband’s catch of six trout to 20 inches from one of the rock groins along the beach front. Netzband used live shrimp freelined with no weight to land his fish.

Jetty Joe at Galveston Bait and Tackle had several customers bringing in speckled trout from all around upper West Bay, Offatts Bayou and the jetties. One of the fishing guides operating out of his bait camp took a party of four to the jetties where they caught a number of nice sized specks.

Another customer caught close to a limit of trout while fishing various spots in Offatts Bayou.

Malcolm Mencacci was back on the water Monday and fishing upper West Bay. Mencaccci said the bite was on again when the incoming tide began to move. Using plum and chartreuse Hackberry Hustlers, he managed eight trout to 20 inches during a two-hour span. The water temperature in West Bay was 53 degrees.

The Texas City Dike and Moses Lake also produced fish. Carl Hancock fished just inside the Moses Lake locks and landed a limit of reds using live mullet for bait.

Jerry Jack Peters and Tom Spencer fished the Texas City Dike Monday where they landed several sand trout, a puppy drum and two sheepshead.

Until Thursday afternoon, I thought we might be returning to an ice age with little or no sunlight, however, the beautiful bright sun finally appeared and with it a warming trend.

Late Thursday, when crossing the causeway on my way back to Galveston there were at least three boats in view fishing at dusk.

Curiosity got the best of me so I pulled off the highway and made my way to Galveston Bait and Tackle, a favorite launching spots for boats fishing upper West Bay.

At the cleaning table was Mike Hester cleaning four nice trout he had caught earlier from a spot between the causeway and railroad bridges. Hester said that there had been limited action for the past week just before dusk and his catch was representative of what he had been taking each time.

In other fishing news, action popped open at the jetties Friday morning with the calm conditions and sunny skies.

Sand trout, sheepshead, reds and black drum were biting, and a few anglers were there to take advantage of it.

Smoky McDaniel and J.L. Russo fished the North Jetty just inside the boat cut Friday where they landed seven nice-sized sheepshead and two black drum. Live and dead shrimp were the baits.

Over at the South Jetty, Maurice Higgins and his two sons found action on bull reds catching three, tagging and retaining one and releasing the other two.

The rocks near the Galveston Ferry Landing produced two sheepshead and two whiting for Mack Shelton who fished from the bank using peeled shrimp for bait.

Bill Curtis of Pearland used dead shrimp and cut bait to land about half an ice chest of sand trout. His fish came from areas around the Pelican Island Bridge late morning Friday.

Before almost every holiday weekend we get notes and calls from readers asking about fishing,

where to go and what is biting. This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend is no exception.

I looked at past Reel Reports for this holiday and saw varied results, all depending on the weather.

Four years ago, trout action was good in Upper West Bay around Greens Cut, and one of Galveston’s party boats made an overnight trip to the floating platforms returning with a fine catch of tuna and other fish.

Other years’ action was spotty with the weather being a big factor.

This year it appears that we should have some nice weather; however, water temperatures in both the bays and along the beachfront are colder than normal.

Thursday’s readings in both areas were in the 40s which is cold and causes fish to be sluggish and somewhat dormant.

If you are planning a trip and are interested in offshore fishing, check with both Galveston Party Boats and Williams Party Boat for their schedules this weekend.

If you are an inshore fisherman, a lot will determine whether there will be any action and much of the focus will be on water temperatures. The warming trend that is expected should increase the water temperatures, and if water levels rise over the next few days, there should be some action on reds and trout, especially sand trout around the jetties.

Deeper water likely will be the key to finding fish with the jetties being at the top of my list.
If you make it out this weekend, let us know how you fared.

Antique tackle buffs, mark your calendar for Feb. 19-22. That is the date of this year’s Houston Antique Lure and Tackle Show.

The event will be held at the Courtyard by Marriot at 12401 Katy Freeway in Houston.

Wednesday continued the pattern of zero fishing reports as a cold north wind kept temperatures at levels not suitable for comfort on the water.

Days like this present opportunities to discuss fishing related subjects. Otherwise, the space just does not permit when the bite is on.

Today, I want to address Texas Fish Records and how many likely record-breaking catches are either released or consumed.

There is no doubt in my mind that a lot of potential record-setting fish are caught and the angler was just not aware of the current record for the fish.

This happened to me in all likelihood. A few years ago, I was fishing the Galveston Ship Channel just off of Pelican Island when I landed a huge pig fish. My fishing companion, who has close to the same number of years fishing the Galveston Bay Complex as I, was amazed at the size of the fish. We both estimated the piggy (not to be confused with pinfish) weighed in the two-pound range.

At the time, neither of us were aware of the state record, and upon returning home, I checked the records and disappointingly learned that my fish would likely have set a new one.

The current record for pig fish is 1.04 pounds, and both my fishing buddy and I know that the fish I released was in excess of that weight.

The moral to this story is to never go fishing without a copy of the records with you.

In other fishing news, Opa Miller of Texas City sent a note advising of another freshwater fishing spot in Galveston County.

Miller said that Texas City has a lagoon inside the storm levee with several miles of canals that was stocked with bass and catfish. Kids catch fish from the bank and the best access is from Bay Street Park or street crossings along the canals.

The fishing doldrums continue with a cold biting north wind dominating the weather picture, and the low waters levels are making the situation worse.

Remember this is January and this is weather that is typical for much of the month. Improvement will come and fish will again be looking for your baits.

Justin Owens sent a note after reading Monday’s article about freshwater water fishing in Galveston County. Owens relates his experiences as a child fishing Clear Creek, and I thought some of you might enjoy reading his comments.

“I’ve lived in Galveston the past 14 years and only fish saltwater,” Owens said. “I grew up along Clear Creek in League City and have many fond memories of fishing the creek and its finger creeks.

“It was always neat to be catching bluegill and catfish, while at the same time seeing mullet hopping along the water. Catfish were always a staple at Countryside Park.

“Along the bank there you could also get bluegill and gar, and even once caught a 10-inch Pacu that was likely an aquarium fish that was released.

“The finger creeks were always good fishing, full of bluegill, pumpkinseed, sunfish and largemouth bass. Magnolia Creek was always fun to fish as a kid. Spanning miles from Clear Creek through the Countryside and Magnolia Creek neighborhoods, it was easily accessible if you didn’t mind the woods (now, I believe a paved trail runs alongside it most of its length).

“We always fished for the panfish that were in abundance until we were introduced to the largemouth bass that it held. Certainly not ‘trophy’ in size, but was a blast to catch when you were 10 years old.

Anyways, very fond memories of fishing ‘The Creek’ as a kid.”

If you have a story about freshwater fishing in Galveston County or know of public spots for such fishing, let us hear from you.

Galveston fishing report

Galveston Fishing Charter Company
832-917-FISH(3474)

Thursday, we discussed the outlook for fishing this year and some of the highlights from the first part of the year. The annual black drum run, trophy trout fishing and winter trout fishing in East and West Bays were the big events during the first quarter.

April we mentioned as one of the most erratic months due mainly to springtime wind.

Actually April is considered by many of the old salts to be the beginning of our saltwater fishing season. Old timers such as myself, focused on April 21, San Jacinto Day, as the key date to start planning saltwater fishing trips.

Once the beach, water temperature exceeds 70 degrees, then the action is on.  April is usually the month when we see sustained 70 degree readings in the surf.

May begins the surf fishing season with many of the migratory fish beginning to reappear.  The first big run of specks usually takes place at the jetties, and as the water warms, the action just gets better.

Normally it is not until late June before stable conditions begin to settle in and as the summer progresses, the fishing, especially offshore, keeps improving. July and August are excellent months to fish the jetties and the offshore is in its prime.

September is noted as a great month for reds, especially at the jetties and in the surf, however, for specks, it is a transition month. Trout begin sensing the shorter days and begin relocating from deeper waters to the bays.

October and November are considered the two best months for inshore fishing and this also is when the annual flounder run takes place. Mid-October through Thanksgiving is the favorite fishing time of a high percentage of inshore anglers.

This year looks like a good one overall for fishing and bar a tragic event (severe freeze or hurricane) there should be a lot of good fishing ahead.

Galveston fishing report

Galveston Fishing Charter Company

Typical January weather is upon us and while it is causing a hiccup in fishing, this gives us an opportunity to look ahead to the fishing scene for the remainder of 2015.

The first quarter of each year is the most erratic for fishing with cold fronts dropping water temperatures and emptying the back bays and marshes.

During periods of good conditions, trout fishing in upper West Bay is often quite good.  Specks will leave their refuges and often school around the Confederate Reef Triangle or between the old Intracoastal Canal and Greens Cut.

At some point from early to mid-February, the annual black drum run will begin with the peak occurring in mid to late March.  Areas where the action takes place on the “Big Uglies,” as black drum are often called, will be along the jetties, Galveston Ship Channel and Texas City Dike.

The big run as it is called is a favorite of anglers wanting to hook up with an offshore caliber fish and not have to leave Galveston Bay.

The first quarter of the year also is trophy trout time in Galveston Bay. During February and early March, huge sows will be found roaming the shallower waters of East and West bays.  Anglers experienced at locating and catching the wall hangers will be hitting the water, mostly wade fishing and in the late afternoon.

We will have more on both the black drum run and trophy trout fishing later in the season.

Not surprising, the second quarter is the year is the second most erratic time for fishing and many anglers feel that April tops the charts as the most undependable time to plan a fishing trip.

Wind is the big factor in April with subsequent months offering gradual improvement until July when stable conditions tend to start being the norm.

Friday, we will take a look at the remainder of the year.

Galveston fishing report

The coldest weather of the season so far is expected this week, with the Galveston area forecasted to have a light freeze in the next few days. Strong northerly winds will add to the misery, so it probably would be best to plan other activities rather than hitting the water.

For the hardy souls who adhere to the adage of the best time to go fishing is when you can, perhaps Offatts Bayou’s Blue Hole or the deep pocket in the Moses Lake Channel would be a possibility for fish.

Sunday, water levels were quite low in West Bay, as the latest cold front pushed a lot of water out of the bays. Remnants of the old wagon bridge could be seen from the Causeway Bridge, and when that occurs, you know the water levels are low.

Late last week, there was a window of fair fishing in Upper West Bay and while trout action is common this time of year, flounder catches are not.

Tommy Hescock and Sterling Jones were wade fishing late Friday afternoon in hopes of landing an early season wall-hanger trout and ended up with three flounder to 19 inches. Sea Shad Bass Assassins were the bait, and the action came from the spoils of the Intracoastal Waterway, just south of Harborwalk.

The anglers were fishing one of the best times of the day for a trophy trout, and while not a single speck hit, the flounder were a surprise and a bonus since both anglers missed last year’s annual flounder run.

You may recall that last January I caught my first flounder ever during January while drift fishing Upper West Bay between Mecom’s and Green’s Cuts.

Most of us are aware that not all of the flounder leave to the deep waters of the Gulf during the annual migration, and apparently this year there are a good number of flat fish remaining in the bays.

January is starting with typical January weather, cold, rainy and windy. Not a good combination for fishing.
Seasoned anglers look to this time of year to take care of their tackle. Many of us will procrastinate,
and by the time we start thinking about cleaning our reels, replacing broken eyes on rods and cleaning out the tackle box, better conditions will be upon us.
Reels, whether spinning or casting, that are used in saltwater need to have a thorough cleaning and oiling at least once a year. Performing this service early in the year is best, as most reels will set up until later in the year when the weather warms and our migratory fish begin to show.

If you are not experienced at dismantling your reels, spend the $20 to $30 to have them professionally cleaned. Most of us have learned the hard way that an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of trouble.

Cleaning the tackle box is another issue of which we seldom think. Throughout the fishing season, saltwater, grime, dirt and other corrosive materials will find their way inside. Left there, they soon will take their toll on your tackle.  This is especially true when the tackle box sets up unused for a period of time.

Lures, hooks, pliers and other tackle will soon start rusting or corroding if not cleaned and sprayed with a light penetrating oil.

Speaking of oil, the spray cans of light oil such as WD-40 are your equipment’s best friend. Spending $3 to $4 will save you hundreds in repairs and early replacements.

Rods need attention as well. Often an eye will show signs of corrosion before a break occurs and some light sand paper along with a light coat of grease can do wonders for extending the life.

Now that the Christmas season is winding down, anglers can resume their focus on fishing. I was out of state for most of the last two weeks and am now getting back into the fishing mode.

While the weather over the past two weeks was not the best for fishing, there were a few windows of fair conditions.

December 30 there was a flurry of action on trout in upper West Bay and around the causeway area.

Jetty Joe at Galveston Bait and Tackle reported some nice catches of trout, along with a few reds and a lone flounder.

Later this year in March and early April, we likely will be discussing some of the early springtime fishing spots in Galveston County, and among them will be the upper reaches of Clear Creek.

Beginning in early March, anglers start reporting catches of various fresh water fish from areas of the creek above Clear Lake.

Last week, Clear Creek made the news as a pending state record channel catfish was caught there by an angler named Terrance Rentz.

The fish weighed 47.98 pounds and was caught near Walter Hall Park. The current state record and soon to be old state record is 36.5 pounds and was set in 1965.

This weekend, waterfowl hunting appears to be a better bet than fishing; however, there is another option for fishermen and boaters and that is the Houston Boat, Sport and Travel Show, which runs through Jan. 11 at NRG Center.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $4 for children six to 12. Children five and under attend for free. Parking is $10, cash only.
