January is starting with typical January weather, cold, rainy and windy. Not a good combination for fishing.
Seasoned anglers look to this time of year to take care of their tackle. Many of us will procrastinate,
and by the time we start thinking about cleaning our reels, replacing broken eyes on rods and cleaning out the tackle box, better conditions will be upon us.

Reels, whether spinning or
casting, that are used in saltwater need to have a thorough cleaning and
oiling at least once a year. Performing this service early in the year
is best, as most reels will set up until later in the year when the
weather warms and our migratory fish begin to show.
If you are not experienced at
dismantling your reels, spend the $20 to $30 to have them professionally
cleaned. Most of us have learned the hard way that an ounce of
prevention is worth more than a pound of trouble.
Cleaning the tackle box is
another issue of which we seldom think. Throughout the fishing season,
saltwater, grime, dirt and other corrosive materials will find their way
inside. Left there, they soon will take their toll on your tackle.
This is especially true when the tackle box sets up unused for a period
of time.
Lures, hooks, pliers and other
tackle will soon start rusting or corroding if not cleaned and sprayed
with a light penetrating oil.
Speaking of oil, the spray cans
of light oil such as WD-40 are your equipment’s best friend. Spending $3
to $4 will save you hundreds in repairs and early replacements.
Rods need attention as well.
Often an eye will show signs of corrosion before a break occurs and some
light sand paper along with a light coat of grease can do wonders for
extending the life.
